Thermostat Screen Blank? Let Winstar Help

by B.Annie on April 17, 2017

Why is my thermostat screen blank?

Newton’s Law strikes again.  It’s the hottest day of the year, you head to the thermostat to finally turn on the air conditioning and BAM! The thermostat screen is completely blank. There are few things as frustrating as not being able to turn on your air conditioner.

Don’t panic. There may be some good news. With a little bit of troubleshooting you may be able to fix it.  Although we love seeing our customers, we also love being able to help you solve some problems yourself.

There are several causes of a blank screen on your thermostat and only a couple will mean you should call us.

Troubleshoot the Problem –

  • Tripped Circuit Breaker – It really could be this simple.  Check your circuit breakers.  If one has been tripped, try resetting the circuit breaker. Hopefully this is the problem and you are up and running again. If not, keep reading.
  • Dead Batteries Several thermostat models use a battery as opposed to being hard wired.  Even better most of them use a battery you probably have in your home, AA. Remove the faceplate of your thermostat and change the battery.  Check your owner’s manual for directions to remove the faceplate.
  • Broken Thermostat – The good news is that a broken thermostat does not necessarily have to be replaced.  An HVAC technician may be able to repair it for a fraction of the cost of replacing it.  If you need to replace it, consider a smart thermostat.
  • Failure in the furnace or air conditioner – If none of the above has helped, your air conditioner or furnace may not be sending voltage to your thermostat.  For this one you will definitely need an HVAC technician.  Call us for further diagnostics.

If you have further questions or would like to have a technician troubleshoot the problem for you, please call 410-360-0058.
